Spoken by 189 million people worldwide, Bengali Language is the seventh most spoken language in the world after Chinese, Spanish, English, Hindi, Arabic and Portuguese.
Out of this huge population, 34% (approximate) are below 14 years of age making it a 65 million strong Bengali speaking children worldwide।
With the advent of low cost smartphones and internet, web based texts are making deep inroads among them very fast.
However, the strong presence and easy availibility of obscene texts and subversive materials in the web in Bengali language are making them easily available to the new gen bengali kids. (For example, please search the term “Bangla Golpo” in google and the results will indicate this)
While lawmakers will be taking their countermeasures in ways they feel proper, we need to take measures to fill the web with healthy reading materials for kids in Bengali in order to outweigh this menace by giving good texts a competitive edge over bad texts.
Bengali is one of the richest languages in children’s literature among all major languages of the world and the treasure trove is increasing constantly with new, bright storytellers and poets joining the fold everyday.
Unfortunately the literary activities for child literature is almost completely paper based and costly and as a result a large portion of this huge Bengali speaking child population is unable to access them.
JOYDHAK is a mission to address this situation. Through this trimonthly periodical we are trying to take the Bengali literature to the desktops and mobile screens of the Bengali population worldwide.
Started initially as a paper based magazine, Joydhak went to Web in 2007, making it the first ever full scale literary Webzine for Bengali children.
Till date we have a very few companions in this field and among them JOYDHAK still leads, with a more than 67000 (cumulative) strong readership worldwide (three years ccumulative figures as of June 2015) and counting.
The Print version of the magazine began in 2000 and in 2007 it switched to an image based website with technical assistance from Rohon Kuddus and his organisation SRISTISUKH.
We have recently launched an audio site at joydhakaudio.wordpress.com to bring Bengali literature to those Bangla speaking people who cannot read the language.
The magazine is completely free for online reading as well as for downloading its pdf versions.
